the open table Model

The Open Table model has been operating successfully for over thirteen years across the United States and is being introduced in countries overseas. In Lynchburg, we have established a strong network of partners for qualified referrals and volunteers. Every step of the process has been tested and is supported with extensive training.

The Candidate Referral Process

Selecting candidates to be served on a table is a critical step. Referral sources, those who refer qualified candidates to be served on a table, are trained and have an in-depth understanding of the model and profile of the successful candidate. They are often career professionals who understand the challenges the candidates face and the qualities needed to utilize the support they will receive. Working closely with well-established social service, public and private organizations we accept the recommendations of these sources and partners with them to ensure a smooth transition from their program to the Open Table model. A survey designed to assess the readiness for change of the candidate is also available for consideration.

The Volunteer Process

After completing the volunteer membership application, a conversation takes place with a trained leader to confirm understanding of the commitment and motivation to serve as a table member. Table member training is the first step in preparing the Table members for the Table, but it cannot be overstated that Table training will last the entire year. It begins with Open Table University training that is conducted through an on line process with the table team and facilitated by an experienced facilitator. There are five modules of one to two hours each with an additional module required for teams that will be serving a young adult.

The Table Experience

As described in the Get Involved section, tables meet weekly for approximately one year. At that time the team and brother or sister discuss what, if any additional support is need to achieve the established goals. If goals are accomplished a graduation celebration is held to honor the brother or sister and everyone involved.

The After Plan

Actual practice and research of the outcomes confirm that graduation is another phase of a journey that continues. Although the commitment is fulfilled, relationships often continue after self-sufficiency is established. In many cases lasting friendships have formed and are woven into the fabric of a future life.
